Roman Public Bath Tarsus Vr Mersin 5d6
Turkey
The public bath, called by the names of “Altından Geçme” or “Kemeraltı”, is on the north of Old Mosque, in Tarsus District, Mersin. What is left from the public bath include a large portion of the dome and the wall extending towards the east and dividing the place into two. The preserved portion of the dome hangs 5 meters above the ground, and it is about 2 meter in diameter. There is a hole on the wall made in order to maintain access to neighborhoods behind the structure. This hole got larger as time passed and looked more like an arch. That must be why it is called “Kemeraltı” (literally: ‘below the arch’). Small findings related with the public bath include oil lamps and ceramics. It is thought that the public house, whose heating systems between the walls can be seen today, dates back to the 2nd century AD.
