San Valentino In Campo Osservatorio
South Tyrol (Bolzano-Bozen)

Max Velier observatory

The main telescope of the observatory is a Cassegrain reflector with a diameter of 80 cm. It is supported by a steel fork fixed onto a concrete foundation.
The mirror, the heart of the telescope, is worked parabolic shape with an accuracy of a diecimillesimo of a millimeter. Since the path with multiple reflections of light the effective focal corresponds to 8 m. In the fire you can apply an eye for observation, or a photographic device.
The telescope has a collection surface of the incident light 10,000 times higher than that of the human eye and can detect celestial bodies 10,000 times weaker. The maximum useful magnification is about 500.
The telescope of the total weight of approximately 3,500 kg moves on its axis by means of a high-precision mechanism to monitor the Earth's rotation.
