Colon Place
Madrid

 

The Plaza de Colon is one of the main attractions of the city of Madrid, Spain. Named after Christopher Columbus, to whom he will honor. It is bounded by the streets Serrano, Goya, Jorge Juan, and the Paseo de Recoletos and La Castellana, combining both with the streets of Genoa. In part this is a large open space known as the Discovery Gardens.

In that space is the art center formerly Teatro Fernán Gómez-Cultural Center of Villa de Madrid, and Christopher Columbus unmonumento Gothic style built between 1881 and 1885. It consists of a square base and an octagonal pillar reliefs carved in stone by Arturo Mélida, and a statue of three meters high carved Italian white marble by Jeronimo Sunol. The total height is 17 meters.

In 1977 he settled in the gardens the Monument to the Discovery of America, by Joaquin Vaquero Turcios. It is a set of three concrete macroesculturas, respectively called Prophecies, The genesis and Discovery, with reliefs and inscriptions.

In the Plaza de Colón flies the flag of Spain the world's largest.

In crossing the square on Calle Genova calls are erected Torres de Colón, designed by architect Antonio Lamela Martínez and built between 1967 y1976.
