Gadaladeniya Temple Complex
Sri Lanka

(From http://www.srilankatravelguide.org) The temple is situated at Diggala in the district of Kandy, about 15 km from Kandy town. The temple is inspired by Dravidian architecture and gives a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. The whole temple complex of Gadaladeniya is perched on a small rocky outcrop. According to writings the temple was built by the King Buwanekabahu IV in the year 1344; Gampola era. The main shrine room has seated Buddha Statue under a Makara Thorana with four standing Buddha images. The makara thorana is decorated with gods such as Brahma, Suyama, Santhusuta, Natha and Maithree, and two followers. The image house is made of stone blocks. A god house of Vishnu is integrated on one side of the entrance. Near to the Visnu Devale there is a Stupa, believed to have been made by the King Parakramabahu V. This stupa has a roof built over it. Four smaller outpost stupas are built on shrines around the main stupa. This structure is called the Vijayantha Prasada named after the mythical palace of god Indra.
