The unofficial name of the Catherine Square is Catherine’s Garden, although among townspeople it is better known by its nicknames “Катькин Сад” or “Montmartre”. The last name is due to the fact that St. Petersburg artists exhibit and sell their works here, as well as paint portraits of those who wish. In the summer, historical costumed characters are on duty at the entrance to the garden and take pictures with tourists. In addition, “Katka’s kindergarten” has been a traditional meeting place for sexual minorities since tsarist times.
