車埕乃集集線之終點站，原為建設日月潭及大觀發電廠工程運料而鋪設，日據時代為了深山裡的水利及木材，沿濁水溪進入仍屬南投深山的水里車埕（水里原為新高山－玉山登山口）於民國十年建造完成。鐵路因此來到車埕（內車埕），水壩興建完成後，將鐵道拆至外車埕(目前之車埕站)，周邊有大觀電廠大壩、振昌木業大型舊廠房，大型儲木池、員工宿舍區、車埕村落、水里溪谷。日據及光復初期，車埕曾是多少年經人的夢想，萬商雲集，一度繁華，因此水里夙有「小台北」之稱，而集集支線正是這交通大動脈。
