Drilling For Heat

The construction of a geothermal well for domestic heating and cooling, in Northwest Philadelphia. Stereoscopic 3D panoramas.

My friend Tim has built several houses with geothermal heating/cooling systems.  Now he is installing one in his own house in Germantown.  This 3D panorama shows the drilling crew at work on the deep well that will be the thermal resrvoir.
This is part of a stereo series documenting the installation of a geothermal HVAC system at the home of a neighbor.  Here, the 900 foot loop of plastic pipe that will carry the working fluid is being readied for insertion into the bore hole.

The last stage of drilling a geothermal well is filling the space around the tubes with a thermally conductive grout.  This machine mixes the grout and pumps it down the hole.
