Marvão, urbe recortada por duas ruas estreitas de orientação orgânica, demarcadas por um regrado casario branco, está cercada por uma cintura de muralhas siscentistas, a mais de 850 metros de altitude Marvão deve o seu nome a Ibn Marwan, figura do Islão peninsular que, pelos anos finais do século IX, aqui se fortificou em discórdia face ao califa. É precisamente desse período que data a primeira referência ao povoado, constante da crónica de al-Rázi, escrita já no século X mas que conserva parcelas dedicadas aos tempos imediatamente anteriores. Aí se menciona que o Monte é conhecido como Amaia de Ibn Maruán, por oposição a outra Amaia, a das ruínas (SIDARUS, 1991, p.13), que deve ser a cidade romana com o mesmo nome, localizada no sopé do monte. Esta referência, que parece corresponder aos anos de 876-877, permite concluir que, já nessa altura, Marvão era um povoado de relevância militar, uma vez que, em outras ocasiões, Ibn Marwan ameaçou retirar-se para o Monte, numa afirmação de revolta militar contra Córdova.
