Ninnis and Mertz Memorial Cross, Azimuth Hill, Antarctica
Antarctica

The memorial cross atop Azimuth Hill, Cape Denison, Antarctica.

A hill about 25 m high, at the north-west end of a steep, narrow rocky ridge which trends north-west overlooking the main hut at Cape Denison. The hill is about 230 m WNW from Mawson's main hut. The feature was named by Douglas Mawson during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914 and appears on official maps of the expedition.

The cross was raised by the remaining members of the Australiasian Antarctic Expedition in 1913 - in honour of Xavier Mertz and Lieutenant B.E.S. Ninnis, who both died during the Far Eastern sledging voyage undertaken by Douglas Mawson. He was the only survivor.

The buildings at Cape Denison are a historic site being conserved by the Mawson's Huts Foundation and Australian Antarctic Division.

Immersive imaging by Peter Morse.
