Aspazijas Boulevard, as one of the components of the boulevards ring, was laid in 1858 during the demolition of the city walls. The Boulevard is laid along the City Canal and the park at the Latvian National Opera. 13th January Street runs along the streambed of the filled in Riga River. Here there were discovered its bank fortifications dating back to the 13-16th century.
