In the evening, the wide street in front of this distinctive old tea house starts to fill with merchants selling fruit. Kashgar's most distinctive architectural feature — old trading houses with terraced balconies and wooden arches — is endangered, with only about a dozen such buildings left, all of them unrenovated and looking very much the worse for wear.
