Located on a high rocky headland overlooking Cardigan Bay, Criccieth Castle was built by the Welsh Prince Llywelyn the Great in the early 13th century. It was later expanded by his grandson, Llywelyn the Last. Despite its natural defensive position, it was captured by King Edward I of England in 1283.
It fell again in 1404, this time to the forces of Owain Glyndŵr, the last native Welshman to hold the title Prince of Wales. The legendary Welsh rebellion leader slighted the castle so that it could not be used again.
