龜吼村屬中萬里加投，地名原來叫做「龜孔（空）」（ku-khang），因為這裡以前有一個石洞（現已填滿成高地），故稱之。在日本時代初期，官方文書尚寫成「龜空」，後來，有人為了使「龜孔」的「孔」一字更像台語，放在字旁另加一「口」部，結果竟變成外地人會誤把「龜吼」唸成國語的「kue-hou」，台語的「ku-hau」，以及牽強附會成本地以前如龜之吼。據文獻云：「龜吼村：以昔日龜吼莊得名。乾隆時，閩人林姓所闢。地有山腳向海，與龜嶼相接，其前形成大澳，故名。」
