旗山火車站建於1910年，建築本身融合仿維多利亞和哥德式風格。主要建材包括石頭、紅磚、以及木材，牆面為真壁造、屋頂則為金屬瓦。

仿哥德式教堂尖塔的候車室，八角錐頂造型宛如童話小屋般。其三角形屋頂、山牆和內部骨架則顯現日本傳統建築工藝。

除了特殊的和洋建築風格外，旗山火車站促進當地經濟繁榮，也讓當地建設有了新觀念、新面貌。
