南雅，是古時平埔族「三貂四社」中的一個聚落，舊稱「南仔吝」，據說是湳仔轉名而來，湳仔的意思為淋水之急，表示此地雨水多。這一帶的岩層為大埔層砂岩，其海岸岩塊的垂直節理甚多，順著節理受風化侵蝕作用而成針狀或柱狀的「岩峰」。
