宝通寺位于湖北省武昌洪山南麓，殿宇亭楼，依山就势，层峦叠起，直入云霄，宏伟壮丽，为荆楚名刹。武昌洪山于南朝刘宋时（420——479年）已建寺院“东山寺”，唐贞观年间（627——649年），鄂国公尉迟敬德在此扩建寺宇，监制铁佛，改东山寺名“弥陀寺”，南宋端平年间（1234——1236年），荆湖制置使甾珙奏理宗发帑金，诏随州大洪山寺迁此，改东山为洪山，赐寺名为“崇宁万寿禅寺”，至明成化二十一年（1485年）更名为“宝通禅寺”。
