CORFU - PINIA

PINIA (Italic origin pigna) means "pine cone" and this name to this small square was given when in 1577 the original Saint Spyridon small churh, near San Rocco, had to be demolished, other buildings too,  to make way for the fortification works of the city of Corfu. So the new big Saint Spyridon church was build in 1590 inside the walled town and the little square, close to the church, was called, at this time, PINIA because two pine cone trees were placed there to remind of the original church, where many pine cone trees were existed .. Nowadays PINIA is one of the commercial centres of the town where visitors can find and buy all kinds of goods ..
