Clyne Gardens Gunnera manicata
Wales

Clyne Gardens, Swansea. The gardens have been made from part the original gardens and woods of Clyne Castle, the home of millionaire William Graham Vivian. He purchased the castle and land in 1860, spending much time and money on developing it to suit his tastes and style. It stayed in the Vivian family until the death of Algernon (The Admiral) in 1952. As a result of death duties the castle was sold and passed to Swansea University. The gardens contain many rare and unusual plants collected from all over the world. In this view, at the edge of the extensive bog garden you can see the giant Elephant Rhubarb - Gunnera manicata (native to the Serra do Mar mountains of southeastern Brazil). The gardens cover some 19 hectares and include over 2,000 different plants including over 800 rhododendrons for which the gardens are famous.
