Purple Mountain Observatory, is one of China's most famous observatory, the first modern astronomical research institutions to establish China's own, known as the "cradle of Chinese modern astronomy." Predecessor was founded in 1928 (Boshin) National Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy in February. 

Headquartered observatory was founded in 1934, is located on the scenic south-eastern suburbs of Nanjing Purple Mountain, adjacent to Zhongshan scenic area in Qinghai, Jiangsu, Shandong, Heilongjiang, Yunnan, there are other observatories. 

Purple Mountain Observatory, built in China marked the beginning of modern astronomical research, China's many branches of modern astronomy observatory stations and mostly born from here, the formation and expansion.
